My birth story… by Christina

I was in hospital for a routine antenatal and there was protein in my urine. I just knew I had pre-eclampsia again, I had it the first time round so I just had a feeling it would rear it’s ugly head again.

They kept me in, did all my bloods, and the midwife said “you will be home in time for tea”. It was about 5.00pm but I knew I wasn’t going anywhere. A doctor came in to see me and his first words were “you are having your babies tonight, emergency c- section”. My mouth just dropped, I felt sick and faint, my 8 year old started crying, and my husband went white. I said I was’t ready – emotionally I wasn’t, but he continued that it was the best thing for the babies and me. So that was it.

In the end I actually had to wait untill 1.30pm the next day. I walked down to theatre, thinking it would help calm my nerves. I was really more nervous about the spinal than anything, I always rememberd how much it hurt the first time. I couldn’t believe I was there, or that my baby boys were about to be born. I was both nervous and excited, and worried that they would need special care. I was 34 weeks so I knew they had a brilliant chance.

I was sat on the bed hunched over with a nurse either side each holding a hand. It seemed like it took ages to get the spinal in, and once it was done my husband came in and sat beside me, thank god. I was quiet through the whole thing, and didn’t say a word apart from that I felt sick. Normally, I’m the type of person who you can’t get a word in edgeways with, so it must have been the shock! Either that or the heavy drugs. LOL.

At 1.30pm on 10th March 2007 Samuel Hicks was born weighing 4lb 14oz followed 1 minute later by William Hicks weighing 4lb 11oz. My beautiful boys. They were taken away for all their checks, William had to have oxygen, but then he let out a little cry. They were perfect. Fortunately they didn’t have to go to scbu, clever boys! We had a cuddle then they were put in a cot side by side, just how they were in my tummy, just perfect. I was taken to recovery then off to a private room but I was all fine. I later had very bad reactions to some drugs and had to have a blood tranfusion. but that was all fixed.

From the moment they were born I felt very special to have such beautiful healthy boys. William and Samuel are now 1 year old, how time has flown. They have been such a joy and we look forward to sharing lots more wonderfully happy family moments together. Our family is complete.
