How To Prep For The Big Clean

We dust and hoover our houses regularly, but sometimes they need a BIG clean and with the arrival of spring, what better time to do it?

There are several reasons you may want to have a deep clean of your home, perhaps you have put it off too long and simply need to have a spring clean or maybe you are moving out of your rental property and want to guarantee you get your deposit back.

But, whatever the reason for it, you can’t just jump straight in and start cleaning or the job won’t be done properly. That’s why you need to spend some time prepping first. But, how do you prep for a big clean?

Set aside enough time

Time is incredibly important – because you need plenty of it to do the job properly. An hour here and there, when you are watching the time because you need to be somewhere else fast, won’t get you anywhere. That’s not to say you should do it all in one go, because you are likely to become bored and therefore less productive. Perhaps take two weekends and split the house into quarters to do across the four days.

Make a plan

Once you have set aside the time, take it room by room and plan how you are going to tackle it. This could include making a list of things that need doing, particularly those things you don’t normally do, so could easily be forgotten, such as cleaning the curtains. Next note down the order you will do everything in – this is important so you don’t end up doing the same task twice or missing a section of the room out. Finally decide how you will tackle the rooms – if you aren’t looking forward to cleaning the kitchen or bathroom, perhaps, plan to do these first and get them out the way.

Calling in the professionals?

If you are planning to call in the professionals to help with either part or all of the big clean, make sure you do so in plenty of time. If you plan to have help with the clean, but it leave it too late to call them, they may be booked up and you will have no choice but to do it yourself. Which means instead of being able to book a Molly Maid end of tenancy cleaning service – where you sit back and relax while they do the hard work for you – you will have that hard work to do as well as the stress that comes with cleaning at the last minute.

Shop for cleaning supplies

Make sure you all the cleaning supplies you need! Nothing will slow you down more than having to keep popping to the shops because you don’t have certain products. Pop them all into a bucket so they’re easy to take around the house with you.

Gather boxes and bags for decluttering

A deep clean is the perfect time to have a clear out – so gather boxes and bags that you can fill with unused items. Label them with ‘to throw away’, ‘to donate’ and ‘to sell’. You may want to have the clear out first or do it as you go – depending which you will find easiest.

Create a cleaning playlist

Prepping will make the job quicker and easier, but it won’t make it any less boring or tiring. What will help with this is creating your own ‘cleaning’ playlist! Add upbeat songs that will make you feel happy and energetic while you tackle each task. Check Buzzfeed’s list of 22 songs that will get you pumped for spring cleaning!

Now you are ready to start cleaning! It may seem like a lot of work before the cleaning has even begun, but it will make the process much easier in the long run!
