Twinsclubbers help in Gambia

A group of Twinsclub forum members are embarking on a trip to Gambia at the end of March, in order to visit and help fellow twin mother Fatou. Inspired by forum member LindaL's first visit in March 2008, members twinmumanlovinit and Cass4Kids are joining her this time, with help and aid from other forum members.

twinmumanlovingit reflects, "I read about Fatou through Lindas posts on Twinsclub and was really interested to see what life was like for a twin mum in The Gambia. I have never been interested in traveling and if you had asked me a year ago if i would go to The Gambia, I probably would have laughed at you. But something really spoke to me from Lindas trips and i felt strongly that I would like to get involved and to see for myself. I would like my four children to grow up thinking about the people who we share the world with and learn all about life in another country, and that we CAN make a difference, even if it is just a small one... every little helps."

For LindaL this will be her third visit. In 2007 she was contacted by friends who told her of Fatou, a single mum of twins living in poor conditions in The Gambia. Fatou's sponsors had sadly had to pull out so Linda decided to take over… "I really felt that it would be nice to help a fellow twin mum." In March 2008 Linda went out and met Fatou. She was bowled over by Fatous humility and how different her life was and how she coped with it all in such appalling conditions. "Then when I returned to The Gambia in December 2009, I was sad to see that things had got worse for Fatou and Adama and Awa, her nine year old girls. She had been evicted from her very basic home (breeze blocks and a tin roof; with a cupboard for a kitchen over a fire, and a hole in the ground for a toilet). Now I found she was living in terrible conditions, no place to cook and sharing a hole in the ground with many others in her crowded compound. It really was like a light had gone out in her eyes and I knew then I would do everything I could to help her."

The cost of living seems low compared to the Western World, but keeping in mind that Fatou can sometimes go two to three days without making any money, life can be a big struggle. At the most she is able to make up to 200 dalasi a week which is around £5. The following list outlines some of the basic expenses that Fatou faces:

SCHOOLING		about £180 per year, this is for BOTH girls
SCHOOL MEALS		£18.87 per month for both girls
SCHOOL STATIONERY		£3.77 per girl for the year
RENT		approximately £20 per month (this amount would mean she could move to somewhere better. If we could raise £24 per month it would be even better)
BREAD		10p
EGGS		13p EACH
CANNED MILK		30p (no fresh milk)
RICE		between £17.61 and £19.90 for a months supply. Fatou can only afford the cheapest rice (broken rice – sweepings off the floor) at 10p a cup
BEEF (MEAT AND BONE)		£2.52 (Fatou cannot afford meat)
BEEF (MEAT OFF BONE)		£3.14
DOCTORS VISITS		£7.55 medication is extra

LindaL has been asked ‘Why Fatou?’ … "Well for me, it was the way she touched my heart. And the fact that I am connected to a fellow mum of twins raising her girls in a
completely different culture on another continent."

March 24th 2010, LindaL is going back with two fellow twinsclubbers who will be able to meet Fatou and see first hand the life of a mum of twins in The Gambia. Twinsclub hope to follow their trip and report back on what they have taken and what they have done. More importantly, they will report back how life is now Fatou and her twin daughters, and how life may now be a bit better for them due to the generosity of Twinsclub forum members.

I found out I was having twins at 9 weeks. I had an early scan because I was bleeding, so fearing the worst we set off for the scan. When we were told it was twins I remember swearing lots, and telling my husband he would have to give up work, as we had a 1 year old as well!

I had an OK pregnancy suffered with sciatica, but other than that was fine I saw a doctor every 2 weeks to check everything was fine. At 27 weeks the doctor decided to give me steroid injections in case they were early.

On the morning of the 28th of April I got up and felt a bit weird, and had really bad pressure on my pelvis. My mum said it's probably because you're having twins so although it was uncomfortable, I didn't think any more about it.

I had to go shopping that morning to buy my brother in law a birthday present, so my mum myself and sister went in to town. While we were out the pressure was getting worse so we decided to go home.

When we got home I phoned the hospital and they told me to come in and be monitored so my sister and I went to the hospital, and my mum looked after Bethany.

In my dad's car I started getting pain. When we arrived at the hospital the pains were getting worse, and the nurse said it sounded like a water infection... but when the doctor came in and examined me I was 10cms dilated!!!

My sister phoned my husband at work, who thankfully arrived in record time.

The doctor said she needs a caesarean. The babies were breech so they rushed me through to the theatre. At this time I had an overwhelming feeling to push, but they kept saying don't push.

I had an epidural, and 5 mins later Jack entered the world weighing 2lb 8oz. Another 5 minutes later Ellie was born weighing 2lb 7oz.

They were taken straight away to special care and I went in to complete shock. I couldn't stop being sick. Just an hour earlier I had been walking round the shops with my family, and now I had had twins!

Ellie had to be transferred to another hospital as they only had one ventilator, and a day later Jack joined her. They spent a total of 10 weeks in hospital but are beautiful 5 yr olds now and doing just fine!

Mum's two sets of twins in baby contest

A PROUD mother has entered her two sets of twins into the Mail's Baby And Toddler Of The Year competition.

Mum-of-six Rachel Steele beat odds of 10,000 to one and gave birth to two sets of non-identical twins.

Demi and Dylan Stephenson were born four months ago, four years after the birth of their big brothers Corey and Lewis Shade.

Miss Steele, 25, of Preston Road, east Hull, also has two older children, Steven, nine, and Becky, six.

Now, the youngest twins will go head-to-head for the title of Baby Of The Year, while the older twins will compete for Toddler Of The Year.

At the Mail's free photoshoot, the twins behaved impeccably, but Miss Steele admits she has her hands full.

She said: "It is double the trouble, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

"It is really nice for them because they always have someone to play with. They always have a close friend."

Bookies William Hill said they would offer a woman with no children odds of 10,000 to one that she would have two sets of twins in her lifetime.

Once a mother has given birth to non-identical twins, she is five times as likely to have them again.

As such, if she made the bet after already having one set of twins, a spokesman for William Hill said her odds would fall to five to one.

Miss Steele said: "I knew it could happen because non-identical twins run in my family.

"My great-granddad, my granddad and my mum are all twins, but it was still a shock. I was gobsmacked when I found out."

Dozens of youngsters have had their professional photographs taken in the contest.

There are four age categories for parents to enter their children into and the winners will share a prize fund of £3,000.

Our photographers will be in the former JJB unit, on the Harbour Deck of Princes Quay shopping centre, until Saturday, March 13.

They will be there from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 5.30pm on Saturday and from 10.30am and 4pm on Sunday.

All you need to enter is a token, printed in the Mail every day until Saturday, March 13.

Miss Steele said: "The difficulty for us is that our family will have to vote four times, because we have to vote for each one individually. "Twins are never cheap."

Once your child has had their photograph taken, parents will be given a date to return to choose the photograph that will be printed in a full-colour photo supplement in the Mail on Tuesday, April 13.

Voting will then get under way.

People will then be asked to collect Mail voting coupons during the first stage of the competition.

The four age categories are up to nine months, 10 to 18 months, 19 to 36 months and three to five years.

The overall winner will scoop £1,000, a framed colour photograph and a trophy.

The winner of each category will receive £500 and a framed black and white photograph.
