Diary of a Twin Mum!!!
Lindsay Richards week commencing 29th May 2004
My name is Lindsay, I am 30, and married to Nick, we have 3 children,
a daughter Leander who is 9 and identical twin boys Cameron and
Lewis. We live on a farm in Cornwall and run a holiday let (twin
friendly of course!), and this has been my week, (taking out the
shouting and screaming!!!!!!!)

Saturday 29th May
Arrived in at 12.45am after cleaning the holiday let as the first
visitors are arriving tomorrow. Went to bed and then dragged myself
out once the din from the boys room became too much to bear!
After getting dressed, Nick went out to work, leaving me with the
clan and waiting for the first visitors.
I then had a mad dash to get a few last minute things, a door mat
and flowers, etc. On the way back to the let I went to visit my friend
quickly for a cup of tea, she has a daughter the same age as mine,
and I never really appreciate how much mine does, as after a few
goes at filling up the watering can for the twins, Isabel was bored
and said she definitely did not want twin brothers! Then quickly
on to their little friend, had lunch there and then took them home
for their nap. I have found them very hard work lately and find
the best thing when I am on my own is to get out and about.
Although I have one less to worry about as my daughter Leander is
at her friends house. Whilst the boys are in bed I feed all the
animals, goats, chickens etc, tidy the garden up, hang out numerous
wash loads and then check emails and of course Twinsclub!!! Could
not really go too far as expecting visitors any time, Nick then
arrived home and we quickly popped to the Big W to buy them a toy
lawnmower as when I go to my friends/toddlers who have one, they
love i! ( and of course fight over it!!) Came home Dh and the boys
cut the grass!!!.
Then had call from the visitors who had left Surrey in the am to
say they were still stuck in a traffic jam at 6pm on the main trunk
road into Cornwall, a word of advice for any of you travelling on
a Saturday in the summer, ALWAYS travel at night/early hours!!!
Left the boys with Nick and went to the let to give it a final polish,
they arrived, they were thrilled with the house which was a great
response, I then went home, and some friends popped over so we decided
to have a Thai take away. Sat and chilled the night away!!!
Sunday 30th May
7am start, the boys were tearing around, oh for a lie in!!!!
All is not lost though as my brother and his girlfriend are coming
to take the boys and Leander out for the day, (instigated by his
girlfriend and not my brother I might add!). This is as I had not
been in contact with her as much lately as I have been busy and
stressed out with the boys.
She thought I could do with a day off, what a star, she also realises
how hard it is, especially as I have no help from my in-laws or
parents ( first lot won't help, second lot live a bit away!!)
Now what do we do all day!!!?
First hitch, the visitors ring to say that the heating is playing
up, so Dh and I pop to the let, and he thinks the new pump needs
to be replaced as it has gone wrong, and also they could not work
the washer/dryer, so I leave more instructions, this is our 'teething'
week if you like, but I am disappointed as the heating is brand
new.
We go to a local restaurant which over looks the beach, very' surfy'
and trendy, and food is fantastic. We wait for the food twiddling
our thumbs as we have no twins!!!!! We ate in peace and used both
hands and arms how exciting!!!!!!
Then onto Tesco to get some food and to B and Q for a few plants
and then sat in the garden for 30 minutes, before we heard the troops
return, they had all had a great day at Newquay Zoo, and had been
good!!
Bath time and then bed for the twins, had something to eat, and
then thought I would quickly check the boys as they had not settled.
Poo everywhere, this is their new habit, which I have also posted
on, nappies off and poo painting everywhere, so back in the bath,
mop out, and another wash load to wash. Another call form the visitors
to say the heating was still playing up, so another call to the
plumber and to see them, came back, fed the animals, and went to
watch TV, another hectic day, brothers girlfriend Sarah could not
believe the poo escapade, and having previously described it, she
said she could not believe it until she had seen it. Quick look
on Twinsclub!!!
Monday 31st May
Another fantastic luxury, Rob (brother) and Sarah( girlfriend) stayed
for the first time, and she got up and took them downstairs so we
could lie in!!! This is fab!!!!!! And certainly the type of sister
in law to have!!!! Hope Rob pulls his finger out and proposes! Got
up and tidied and then took Sarah to our local bargain gift centre.
Back for lunch, friends called around and then my parents came down.
Then took my friend to the local fabric shop as I am interior designing
her lounge for her and making the curtains also. Robert (Brother)
goes home with his girlfriend Sarah who is exhausted after her twin
respite care. I said imagine this after 2 ½ years, and a previous
6 months of no sleep during pregnancy!!!!!
My daughter also departs with my parents and in return I am left
with my 14 year old brother James.
We have promised the boys a train ride as they have become fascinated
by them, so off we trundle to Camborne, catch the train to Truro
and then over the track and catch another back!!! 3rd train ride
ever for me and 2nd for the boys!!! We are so rural that you have
to learn to drive and that's that, in fact where I grew up the local
station is 14 miles away!!!
Tuesday 1st June
After the normal boring chores and another 5 wash loads, I take
my friend to a shop that sells fab bits and bobs for the home to
help design her lounge, very nice spending some one elses money!!!!!!
We then came back and decided to stay in the garden all day, I am
trying to keep the boys entertained and am trying to spend more
time with them rather than leaving them to it and me trying to do
more work, to see if they behave a little bit better, its also very
hard as they have no playschool or twins club being that it is half
term, but on the positive side it means I do not have the school
run for my daughter twice a day.
Our friends have also donated us a 12 foot plunge pool as they are
having a bigger new one delivered, so Nick and Colin clean it up
and install it, and begin to fill it up!! Which will take 7 hours!!!!!
No time at all for cooking so we are treated to pizza by our friends
for all my hard work designing their lounge!! Can't be bad!!!!
Wednesday 2nd June
Staying in the garden again. The thing is with the boys having an
after dinner nap, I am tired, but it is worth it, as at least I
get a 2/3 hour break, on the days I have tried not giving them a
sleep it is awful and makes no difference to their bedtime and behaviour
at night.
Glorious weather so they are all in the new pool, and have a great
time, we also have a quick game of badminton in the garden.
Having James my younger brother is also great as dh and myself can
'pop' to Tescos on our own which is strange and then pop into our
mates on the way home quickly which we have not done for years!!!!!!!!!
Came back at 10pm and then ironed to 12.30am.
Thursday 3rd June
Lots of paperwork to do, so James tries to keep the peace between
the twins whilst I fill in the banking etc, the boys are horrendous
fighting and wanting each others toys etc!!! I had not realised
how much I fit into the time that they are at playschool, but you
can get so much done in peace without them, but then I am always
on the go and have never sat and watched daytime TV in all of their
two and a half years!!??? I must be mad.
Go to get some milk and go to the bank, and then the boys go to
bed, planning on going to the beach when they wake up, which they
don't until 4pm, but off we go as its only a mile away, they enjoy
it, but still fight and find time to cry a lot. Nick then pops down
and decides to take them home and starts building the fence around
the pool so as to keep the boys safe.
I go to my friends whose husband is an artist so my other friend
could look at his art work, then home dh and bro watching some rubbish
so I decide to really indulge and go to the chat room on Twinsclub!!!!!!!
Chatted for ages with sally, kc and keith, then to bed.
Friday 4th June
Weather not quite as good today so we decided not to beach it!!!
Cameron and Lewis once again fighting , the usual, very tired and
teasy!!! As we say down here (it means ratty/moody).
Nick comes in and takes one of the boys with him to try and placate
their arguing over the brio train set, Hayley my friend and her
son Ben come in to play, what a novelty for Ben only having one
half of the twins to play with. I say to Hayley that it's so easy
with the one, and I am sure she thinks I am mad, but I said I know
one is hard work but it is more manageable and one does not fight
with himself like two do!!!!!
Put them to bed as they are so horrible and then I sit down to type
up my diary!!! When the boys wake up we are off to my mums for the
evening as my brother needs more belongings and I want to pick up
Leander.
What a week, I have not even added all the cleaning, more washing
etc etc, as I am sure that you guys know better than most how hard
it all is, and also I think I must be mad knowing that tomorrow
I will be cleaning an additional house and washing more bed linen
and towels!
Basically, that's it, not too bad a week, as no school run and
Leander has been at mum's and we have had some help for the first
time, and also this is Nick's quietest month of the year. July is
the divorce month when he is working 80/100 hours a week!! Digging
potatoes, on behalf of all you Walkers crisps eaters out there!!!!!!!
Thank god he is so brilliant when he is around, in fact the best
dad and twins dad! I know, amongst all of my friends anyway!!!
I suppose the trouble with me is that I am always on the go!! Always
have been and always will be, the difference is it used to be with
horses, but now its with children!!!, the bad news is though that
they can not be shut in a stable and forgotten about!!!!!
Thanks and bye for now
Lindsay, mum to Leander, Cameron and Lewis
