Birth Stories

<next story>..<previous story>

I was 35 weeks and 6 days pregnant, and feeling it! It was Monday and I was due to have a scan on the Friday and was going to beg the Consultant to GET THEM OUT as I just couldn't stand it any more! The house was literally a building site, new windows being fitted, decorators inside and out, patio out back and plasterers in the house. Workmen kept bringing me drinks as I was stuck in the bedroom. I spent the day sorting through papers (later realised in the panic I'd thrown out the wrong pile, lost my birth certificate, bills that needed paying, wage slips, bank statements etc!)

Dp (as he was then, now Dh) came home about 3:30 but was outside helping the builders. I waddled to the toilet and there was a gush of water and it just kept coming! I yelled and yelled and ages later dp heard and finally came. He rang the hospital and they said come in but no need to rush. I rang my mum, packed my bag and we set off (with the decorator yelling at me to keep my legs crossed, as he hadn't even started the babies room! Lol).

They said they'd keep me in overnight and monitor me but I wasn't having contractions. About 7:30 Mark went home to try and get some sleep and 5 mins later my mum turned up, said she just couldn't keep away. I was persuading her to go home when the contractions started. She called Mark and they transferred me to a private room at 9:30...........and left me for 4 hours.....later they said they hadn't wanted to disturb us as I had Mark and my mum. Anyway I didn't seem to be getting anywhere so mum finally called for a midwife who examined me and said "I think twin 1 is breech" She'd been breech on all scans as I had told them.

At this all hell broke loose and I was rushed to delivery for an emergency scan and then an emergency c-section. The worst was the spinal block, it took them 7 attempts to get it in. My beautiful girls were born at 4:41 am Catherine (Katie) 6lb 6oz and 4:43am Elizabeth (Beth) 6lb 14oz at 36 weeks exactly. Both were fine although Beth needed some oxygen and both had slight jaundice. We stayed on the ward for a week (partly to give the decorator time to get one room done). The first few weeks were hard but they bring us such joy and it's great having twins!
