My Birth Story by Stacey
My pregnancy was fine, apart from the fact that my babies were
laying on a nerve from my right leg. It was complete agony at times
and ultimately meant that I had to give up work at 16 weeks. Other
than this, everything was going well. I went for my 36wk scan on
24th oct 2005 and it became a little family outing. My dad took
me for my scan and my nan came to see the babies on the scan!
Afterwards I went to see the consultant and it was then that she
explained to me that the babies had'nt really grown at all since
my last scan 2wks before. They wanted to admit me there and then,
to be induced later on in the day. I insisted on going home to get
my hospital bag but they were adamant that I couldn't leave. Eventually
after a lot of pleading and begging, they gave me half an hour to
collect my things and be back! At home I quickly phoned my mum and
my friends and as I couldn't get in touch with my partner Kev, I
left him a note!
I got back to the hospital at 11.30am and they gave me the 1st
gel at 2.30pm. I was so excited, I thought I was gonna have my boys
that day, how wrong I was! I was hooked up to a monitor every hour
for half an hour every day for 4 days. On the Thursday morning after
having 3 gels since Monday, the consultant came to check me and
I was only 1cm dilated. I cried and cried and told them if i didn't
have the boys that day I was going home! At 12 noon they took me
down to the delivery ward, I had my mum and Kev with me, they put
me on a syntocin drip and tryed to break my waters for a whole 15
minutes! I was in agony! They had to give me gas and air to do it
as I was only 1cm dilated and they had to put an electrode on twin
1's head. They finally broke my waters and 10 minutes later I got
my 1st contraction. I managed until 7pm and then I got my epidural,
they checked me at 7.30pm and I was only 3cm, I was so gutted!
I thought I wasn't gonna have the boys until the next day but by
9pm, even with the epidural, I felt a sudden urge to push. I told
the midwife I could feel a lot of pressure, so she checked me and
finally I was fully dilated. She had to call the consultant when
the boys heart rate kept dropping down and he also had to be there
to deliver them, but he was busy in theatre doing a c section so
wasn't available immediately. The urge to push was getting unbearable,
but I had to hold on for him to come down! The midwife had to top
up my epidural so I wouldn't feel like pushing, but I could still
feel it. She called the consultant again and he was still busy.
I simply couldn't believe that after all this time I had to hold
on because some man was too busy to see me! Surely there must have
been another consultant somewhere in the hospital!.
In the end the midwife told me to start pushing and 5 minutes later
at 10.30pm the consultant and a large crowd of trainee docs and
midwives finally got to my room - at the final count there 12 people
in the room! At 23.11 on 27th Oct 2005 Connor Anthony arrived weighing
6lb and 18 minutes later at 23.29 Joshua Jack arrived with the help
of ventouse weighing 4lb 12 oz. I was over the moon and feeling
very proud of myself for achieving a vaginal delivery. I was stiched
up and given a lovely cup of coffee and 4 pieces of toast, I was
starving! The 3 of us were taken to the ward at 3am but I couldn't
sleep with the amazement of what had gone on.
We were discharged on the 30th Oct but the next day they were taken
into hospital again as they both had jaundice and were put into
incubators and had phototherapy for 3 days. They are now six months
old and look nothing like each other! I couldn't imagine life without
my boys now, they are wonderful!
