My Birth Story by Claire H
It was september 2002 and I had just been for my first scan so
I was about 12 weeks pregnant. We got terrible news that the baby
wasn't growing and they couldn't find a heart beat. I can't descride
how my husband and I felt except that we were numb.
A few months passed and we descided to try again. December 2003
- 1 year later no joy but I was started getting lower abdomial pains
so we had appointment to go and have scan to see what the problem
was. We were told my ovaries were covered in cists (P.C.O.S) and
that we would never be able to conceive naturally. An appointment
was made for March 2004 to go and talk about starting I.V.F treatment
but I did a pregnancy test in Feburary 2004 and unbelievably I was
pregnant!
I didn't want to get too excited until after the 1st scan because
of what happened before. As I lay on the bed waiting for the scan
my husband turned to me and said "everything's going to be alright".
The sonographer put the jelly on and after what felt like hours
she said "have you actually heard the heart beat at your doctors
?". My heart just SANK and it was written all over my face. Then
the sonographer looked up at me and said "oh there's nothing wrong
- it's just there are two heartbeats".
We couldn't believe it! We were shaking, laughing and crying all
at the same time (TWINS!!).
We told our families and friends and they all thought we were kidding
them until we showed them the scan. 38 weeks and 5 days in we were
told twin 1 was breech so a c-section was booked for the following
day, Tuesday 5th October 2004. We arrived at hospital at 8am and
my c-section was booked for 1.30pm. I went down for my spinal about
1pm, I had to have 2 spinals and an epidural (it was like knocking
out a horse). Matthew (twin 1) was eventually born at 3.12pm weighing
5lb 12oz and Zak (twin 2) was born at 3.14pm weighing 5lb 10oz they
were both perfect - 2 baby boys. I got back to my room about 5pm
and my husband had gone to phone everyone and I can remember laying
in bed with the my 2 boys at the side of me thinking Oh my god I
have 2 babies - how can I look after 2 babies at the same time.
Then panic set in!
My
husband came back to my room and I gasped "you can't leave me alone
tonight what if they both want feeding together, I can't do it on
my own!". 3 days later we were home and my husband and I were finding
out just how hard it is looking after 2 babies. The first few months
were really hard especially when my husband went back to work -
but they are so worth it..... They are now 19 months old as I write
this and into everything. Everyone keeps asking if we are going
to have anymore, our reply is no-way, but I would love a little
girl so who knows....
