My Birth Story by Nicola

Well here we go...! When I found out I was having twins I was left with complete mixed emotions. I had been trying for baby no.2 for nearly 2 years and was starting to fear it would never happen, but then WHAM, it happened alright!! I had been longing for a girl for ages and when we asked at the 20 week scan for the sex, I was told there were 2 girls in there ( my hubby nearly fainted at the thought of all the pink clothes we had to buy - or should I say I had to buy! ).

The first few months went ok, as far as twin pregnancies go, but then at 32 weeks I started losing fluid from around the babies and it looked as though they were going to be delivered. I was given steriod injections to develop their lungs, and I was visiting the hospital daily, which in the school summer hols with a 5 1/2 year old to entertain was awkward to say the least. Luckily I live only 5 mins walk from hospital so this took pressure off slightly but walking anywhere in the heat of summer at 32 weeks pregnant with twins is difficult!! Happily, the water reappeared and things were ok again. In the meantime I'd had disagreements with my consultant or should I say his team (as I never actually met him) and I was given differing ideas on what should happen at the birth of my twins. I ended up swapping consultants 2 weeks before the babies arrived.

At 36 weeks 6 days we had decided to take our son out for lunch and onto the cinema. I was experiencing mild contractions all day and decided after tea to call my parents to collect my son. I went to hospital at 9pm to discover I was 4cm dilated and the relief was enormous. I was completely fed up of carrying my enormous belly around!! The labour was great. I was given an epidural, and slept on and off through the night with my hubby on the floor beside me. At 6am I was fully dilated and was then wheeled to theatre to deliver the babies. I was exhausted and felt queasy from the epidural, and after being trussed up like an animal I started to push, although it felt totally unnatural as i couldnt feel a thing. Eventually, at 08.55am Isabelle Sophie made her entrance into the world, with her big round eyes beaming at me. She was perfect, weighing in at 4lb 11oz.

However (and quite commonly, I was told afterwards) twin 2 had got stuck at the top of my stomach. I was frantically pushing and the surgeon was frantically pulling her, she was facing the wrong way and just didnt want to come out. After 1 hour her heart rate dropped and she was distressed and I ended up with an emergency section. This, I have to say, was more hideous than anyone had explained to me! Niamh Eleanor arrived at 10.13am crying (and has done ever since), weighing in at a very respectable 5lb 9oz. Once we had been transferred onto recovery ward it was apparent that Niamh was grunting rather loudly and it was getting worse, she was taken to scbu much to my horror, although I knew it was for the best.

It turned out she had hypothermia, low body sugar, and the grunting was a chest infection. She was put on an antibiotic drip for 42 hours then required phototherapy for 24hours (good job she's a tough cookie). Niamh came out of scbu after 3 days, but within 24 hours they both had to return to scbu as they weren't feeding and had lost 1lb in weight since birth. They had tubes fed through their noses and into their stomaches to feed them every 4 hours!

In the meantime I had to receive a blood transfusion to replace 2 pints of blood lost during surgery, I dealt with childbirth a lot easier than a blood transfusion! At 10 days old my gorgeous baby girls came home, my son adores them, and I think the feeling is very mutual! At 11 months old Niamh is still the more dominant one, poor Issy is having to stick up for herself!

Twins are hard work, but well worth it, they make me laugh and smile everyday, but there certainly won't be any more babies in this house!! From Nicola, mummy to Louis ( 6 yrs old ), Isabelle & Niamh ( 11 months old ).
