My Birth Story, by Linzi W
When Iwent for the first scan, the family had joked I would be
expecting twins due to my huge size at ten weeks, but it still came
as quite a shock when the doctor told me there was two!
My mom was over the moon whilst my dad thought we were pulling
his leg. Sadly I'd split up with their father early on and he wasn't
going to be playing an active role with the kids. Thankfully I was
able to stop at home with my parents and they were to prove essential
when it came to having a scan every week and attend an hours monitoring
every two days. The emotional strain was hard as my whole world
had been turned upside down, and eventhough my confidence was low
and the backache was unbearable, I quite looked forward to seeing
the twins.
I'd been told they were non-identical girls and they were developing
fine. For someone who wasn't planning on children, I became very
protective and concerned that the twins would have problems. This
was made worse when at 27 weeks I was admitted to hospital with
possible early labour. Thankfully everything was fine. Around the
32nd week the twins weren' t growing as well as the doctors hoped,
so for the following 6 weeks, I was monitored and scanned.
At 36 weeks I was told I would be induced the next morning which
was a sudden reality check. 6hrs after being induced I was told
the twins were too small and a caesarean would be the safest bet.
The next day Keira was delivered at 3.43pm weighing 5lb 1oz following
3 mins later by Katie weighing 3lb 15oz. Everything just seemed
to come together then.
It was really hard in the beginning, not really being able to move
and Katie in special care. I managed to hold Katie for 4hrs before
she was taken to special care for the next 10 days. It was difficult
with the double buggy, 3-hourly feeds and jumping between the hospital
and home. At 3mths old I got post-natal depression which I wouldn't
wish on anyone.
My girls are now 9mths old and doing better than the doctors could
have hoped. I've lost a stone, managed to get back in my jeans and
enjoying my children. Just goes to show, a situation which looks
bad at first can turn out for the better.
