My birth story...by Gemma
Hi - I thought I'd share the details of the birth of my two beautiful
daughters Isabella & Poppy who were born on Sunday 25th July 2004.
I was in hospital previously for a week as my waters had broken
and I was kept in on antibiotics, while there I experienced 3/4
big bleeds which I was told could be a placenta problem or a cervical
one. The consultants choose not to deliver me, they informed me
that I should be left as long as possible so that the twins can
mature etc. even though I was very concerned about the bleeds.
After the week I was discharged, came home and all was fine (I
was still leaking water which was pink but I was advised that was
fine!?!) the following Saturday which was the 24th July, my daughters
7th Birthday, I woke to find yet again I was bleeding (red blood
very different to the pinkish liquid). I knew of course I had to
go back to hospital but just couldn't believe it would happen on
my daughters birthday I felt so guilty, so I stayed calm (tried)
didn't mention anything to my dp or daughter, was there for my daughter
while she opened her pressies, had a bath then told my dp what was
happening.
I waited for my mum to arrive as she was looking after my daughter.
We quicky sang happy birthday to my daughter and darted for the
door. I felt awful, and obviously really worried about the twins
even though they were still being very frisky and moving about loads.
I got to hospital and went onto the antenatal ward and waited an
hour and half to be seen even though they knew I was bleeding again.
While waiting I started to get tightenings. I was eventually seen
and put on a monitor straight away, meanwhile the tightenings continued
and I got them every 3 mins. The doctor came to see me and advised
they still were not prepared to deliver me by c-section (we had
to decided on an elective c-section) even though this was my 5th
big bleed!?! I advised them of my tightenings and she said she didn't
think I was in labour, she tried to examine me but cos there was
lots of blood she couldn't tell. At 12.30am I told my dp to go home
even though I was still getting pains cos there was no point in
both of us getting knackered. All night the pains continued, so
at 5.30am I'd had enough I called the midwife and told her I was
in agony.
I had 3 midwives around me looking at the print out from the monitor,
one eventually said lets just get her up to labour ward (thank god).
Got there and was checked and told I was 3/4cm dilated - I was in
fact in labour (knew I wasn't over-reacting) they called my dp he
arrived at 6.30am. The doctor came and saw me and advised as it
was a Sunday there wasn't much staff around so all the consultants
etc would have to be paged so I could not have a c-section till
9am! So basically I had to labour till then (thank god for gas &
air). 9am came then 9.30am and eventually I was taken down to theatre,
they tried to get the spinal in and had huge problems apparently
I have a boney back!??? (yeah right) and the doctor had to get his
boss and this all took another hour and a half of them messing around
trying to stick needles in different parts of my back. (You can
imagine the bruising).
It worked eventually and all the pain was taken away (bliss). I
hadn't even realised they had cut me open, it was only when I heard
Isabella crying, it was soo overwelming. Isabella was fine and a
minute later her sister Poppy was born but had a few problems. She
wasn't breathing that well and was rushed off to scbu, my dp was
brilliant stayed with me the whole time and then he held Isabella,
it was so lovely to see him holding her and knowing she was fine
and breathing. My tummy felt a bit like a washing machine have things
pulled about inside me, very strange feeling.
When they finished was taken to recovery room where I saw two photos
of both my babies (at this point they were both in scbu). I was
kept in the recovery room for a bit as I was having problems breathing.
I was already finding it really difficult not seeing my babies.I
was also told by the doctors I did in fact have a placenta abruption.
All I could think of was thank god I went into labour! A few hours
later I eventually held both of them which was fantastic! They were
both breathing for themselves but were in incubators with quite
a few tubes coming out of them. I am just so relieved that they
are so well now!
They are both out of incubators in a big cot together which is
lovely as they are so much calmer now. They did lose a bit of weight,
Poppy went down to 4lb 1oz, but they both have now put a little
back on, although not back to birth weights yet. They are mainly
being tube fed using my breast milk, but we are really trying to
breastfeed. They are both a little jaundiced and having there SPR
levels checked daily, they have had one treatment of phototherapy.
There doing so well! I just cannot wait to get them home.
