My Birth Story, by Susan Monk.
One of Each!
At 33 weeks pregnant my waters broke around Caitlin, Went immediately
to hospital and had to go through a short time of worry waiting
to find out if I had to go to another hospital to give birth as
they weren't sure there were any special care cots left, luckily
they just moved a twin c-section so that my babies could have priority.
After two hours of contracting every five minutes I was persuaded
to have diamorphine as I was only 1cm dilated. After two hours of
small naps the contractions came back with force. I then had to
wait another two hours for an anaesthetist to arrive for an epidural.
When the consultant examined me again she was shocked to discover
that I was fully dilated after only four hours!! Still got my epidural
thank god!!
I then began to push but was still getting nowhere after one hour
and twenty minutes so the consultant decided to give me a hand with
an episiotomy and forceps. Caitlin was born weighing 4lb 31/2oz
at 11.42am, absolutely beautiful eyes staring in awe at me! (GULP!).
When I was examined again we found out that Bethany was coming hand
first so it was a major rush to theatre for a section before she
started to come any further. Remember being wheeled past in-laws
waiting in corridor, poor father-in-law looked really pale, held
his thumb up and said are you ok, I held my thumb back up and said,
"Yeah, I'm just off for a c-section!"
Remember consultant and anaesthetist arguing over my pain relief,
in the end I had my epidural topped up. Bethany came into the world
at 12.11pm weighing in at 3lb 131/2oz. Hardly got to see her though
as she was whipped straight off to SCBU. Both girls were breathing
on their own and were out of incubators within twenty-four hours.
I stayed in hospital for 10 days and my daughters were in for an
extra week. Had to have a blood transfusion after three days as
I had lost 3 pints of blood during the deliveries. Screamed maternity
ward down getting the transfusion needle in, funny that as I never
peeped once during labour.
A painful experience at both ends but at least I can make the informed
decision of which way to give birth next time around (Naturally
by the way and no it hasn't put me off at all!) We're all home and
happy and the girls are thriving, they were definitely identical
but are so very different in my eyes.
