Birth Story by Jan (Nike Girl)

Jan's babies

Monday 24th May 2004 was taken back to hossy with severe sickness and acid. When my urine was tested it showed 3+ketone levels which I was told was starvation levels, I was admitted straight away and put on saline and potassium and sugar drips.

Tuesday 25th May drips in arm all day to sort me out, also had liver scan due to docs worried something might be wrong with my liver scan also shown both babies as still breech but growing well!

Weds morning at 5.15am--turned over in bed to try to get up for loo and felt myself *wee*. Didn’t realise til moved my leg and more came out that my waters had gone and left me stuck in middle of bed frozen with fear and embarrassment buzzing for midwife! The midwife came and helped me up onto a waterproof mat thing and helped me clean up, then cleaned the bed up and called for the doctor. Doc examined me and contractions started at same time! Turned out I was 3 cm's dilated, was taken straight to delivery where I rang Chris and my mum.

My mum rushed to the hospital as she only lives 5 mins away to be with me until Chris could get there. By the time mum got there another internal was taking place which showed me 5 cm's dilated (about8.30am). I was in agony from the contractions which were making me push down but babies were still breech. The consultant came and said she wasn’t happy to deliver me at 33+6 weeks and wanted to stop labour asap. She managed to get 3 tabs into me but there was no sign of it stopping and I was hitting gas and air like hell!!

Then I was rushed into theatre for an emergency section – there was a very sexy guy there who talked me through the spinal block while it was put in. Chris made it into theatre after paying 20 quid in mad rush in a taxi to get to me, with 5 mins to spare before they operated! The next thing I knew Lewis was brought out screaming followed by Daniel. Fast and painless and 2 screaming babies later I lay there big grin on my face - no pain and was sewn up. Both babies scored 10/10 on the Apgar and went into special care to learn to feed. There were no problems at all with them Lewis weighed 3lb's 14 oz's and Daniel weighed 4lb's 4 oz's. I didn’t get to see babies til the next day which was quite bad as due to my sickness and not eating I still had no energy. I ended up nearly fainting in the shower and nearly fainting while having first hold of Daniel! I got to hold Lewis for first time on Friday night. They were in special care for 2 weeks exactly and since being at home they eat very well and are both healthy little boys who we all love to bits!!

Jan,
Mum to Daniel and Lewis, Born at 33 + 6, weighing 4lb 40z and 3lb 14oz.
